Actresses Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spensor, and singer Janelle Monae are kicking off 2017 with a full dose of Melanin Magic in the new FOX film Hidden Figures hitting theaters Friday, January 6th!

HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

In scouring online for show dates and times, we were highly disappointed to learn that only a few theaters are offering an advance screening of the film on Thursday, January 5th, but thereafter only 2 theaters in Charlotte, NC will air the film; AMC Carolina Pavilion 22 and AMC Concord Mills 24.

Thursday - January 5th (Advance Screening)

For those of you interested, we're organizing a group movie date for Friday, January 6th to go out and support this great film.  We will meet at the AMC Concord Mills 24 location for their 10:30pm showing.  If we can organize for enough of us to attend, we can get a group rate on tickets!  Let's show up in great numbers ladies!

Friday - January 6th (Release Date)

First Lady, Michelle Obama was in Charlotte today supporting and rallying support for the Clinton/Kaine Team as they continue to drum up support in hopes of winning the 2016 Presidential Election.  Check out the video below of First Lady Obama speaking in support of Hillary Clinton.  First Lady Obama spoke to the values and steadiness required to sit in the oval office.

Nestled in SouthPark you'll find one of Charlotte's newest gems and fashion houses, Luxe Angel Boutique, a boutique carrying fashion lines for both women and men.  Owned and operated locally, boutique owner Lisa opened the doors of Luxe Angel just a year ago, and is rapidly growing in both inventory and brand presence.  With inventory arriving daily, and exclusive accessory lines, Luxe Angel Boutique features style for all ages.

Lisa named the boutique Luxe Angel in loving memory of her two parents who she refers to as her angels watching over her, and the word luxe, meaning luxurious.  As the primary buyer for the boutique, Lisa states "we all want to wear clothes that feel great on" (what she calls delicious), but not expensive in price.  Surprisingly the boutique's price point ranges from $30 - 200, encompassing all budgets.  When asked to describe her typical customer at Luxe Angel, Lisa simply replied "there's something for everyone" and she was spot on.  While frequenting the boutique we saw styles that were on trend ranging from fringe to denim, whimsical dresses, to great layering pieces for fall.

In addition to the many brands carried in store, Luxe Angel also as has their own signature line of basics, ranging in price from $39 - 59.  Lisa developed the brand's signature line of basics because classics are the foundation to a great wardrobe, particularly in fall, when layering makes for great style.  Made of organic fabrics and organic dyes, Luxe Angel basics wash and wear well, and last longer.  The basics line is currently available for women, the men's division has not launched yet.

While we're sure you'll love shopping the boutique, the fun doesn't stop there.  Lisa and her amazing staff at Luxe Angel also host in-store events, networking soirees, mom parties (a great mid-day break away), and private shopping parties.  Drop by the boutique, or visit online at

By now we've all watched last nights 2016 Presidential Debate, or at least read social media reviews and memes, and one thing prevails . . . . 2016 Presidential Nominee and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton won the debate hands down.  A post debate poll conducted on CNN announced Clinton as the debate winner with 62% of viewers casting in her favor versus Trump's percentage was 27%.  Clinton was calm, collected, prepared, and factual (her real time fact checker on her site during the debate was absolute GENIUS); Trump was Trump, brash, combative, over talking, and emotional.  In what could easily be considered a farce of a debate, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump stood on their platforms for approximately 90 minutes defending their stance on issues ranging from community policing (with a mention of Charlotte), birtherism, the Iraq war, global relations, taxes, and the oh so famous "presidential look", or her lack thereof according to Trump.

Trump continued to dance around the subject, i.e lying, that he can not release his tax returns due to being under audit.  He is now claiming that he will release the returns, pending the release of the 33,000 deleted emails from Clinton.  We all know he's not going to release the returns and we're glad that Clinton called him out on it boldly.  For a Presidential candidate to bask and gloat in the fact of not paying federal taxes is a slap in the face to hard working Americans who pay taxes to ensure this country stays afloat.

Trump in a delusional state of mind advocated for Stop and Frisk, a racial profiling measure that was deemed unconstitutional, in efforts to decrease crime, particularly in urban areas.  He combatively pronounced that the measure in fact was not deemed unconstitutional . . . . . How stupid can one be???  U.S. District Court Judge Shira Scheindlin did rule in 2013 that the stop and frisk practice violated the Constitution in the landmark case, Floyd v. City of New York.  Judge Scheindlin ruled that stop and frisk, in practice, had a discriminatory effect on blacks and Hispanics, violating the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments. “The Equal Protection Clause’s prohibition on selective enforcement means that suspicious blacks and Hispanics may not be treated differently by the police than equally suspicious whites,” the judge said.

Clinton clearly affirmed that Trump built his political agenda based upon his attacks of President Barack Obama and his United States citizenship.  Since 2011, Trump has rambled on and on that our President was not a US citizen, so much so, that the President did indeed produce his birth certificate to cease all rumors.  Trump still carried on his tyrant for 5 years, as early as January 2016, and has now succumbed to being wrong.  Or in his words as he stated when questioned about his support of the Iraq war (which he how states he did not support - lol) . . . . . "the record shows that I'm right".

Of all the offensive and repulsive things Trump has said, critiquing the look of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is completely absurd, especially considering his hair and terrible tan.  Proven yet again, Trump denied saying that Clinton did not have "the presidential look" and opted for the word "stamina".  In a blatant lie, he rambled on and on completely forgetting his interview with ABC News where he is indeed quoted for having said, “I just don’t believe she has a presidential look, and you need a presidential look,” (read/watch it HERE).

On all accounts, round one was a landslide for Presidential Nominee and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.  Her experience deems her credible and her transparency is appreciated.  She acknowledged the emails, but still stood firm on her platform and cited actual plans of how to continue this country moving forward in the right direction.  Trump on the other hand answered hardly any questions.  He danced and tap danced around the issues by simply NOT answering the questions that were posed, and answering questions that were not posed.

The next Presidential Debate is scheduled for Sunday, October 9th at 9pm.

For nearly a week now, the city of Charlote has been in turmoil.  The shooting death of 43 year old #KeithLamontScott on Tuesday, September 20th by CMPD officer(s) has brought both a great deal of attention to the city, and a call for protests demanding justice.  Protests from supporters (across all races) chanting the growing mantra of #BlackLivesMatter.  Unwanted attention to the city as CMPD dash and bodycam footage have been released (partially), and the Live and recorded videos of the victim's daughter and wife.

What started out as a week full of promise, ended in not only the life of #KeithLamontScott being taken, but also the like of #JustinCarr, an innocent bystander and protester, that took to the streets in support of the cause.  Here at Queen City Magazine, we had the week of September 19th - 23rd planned and mapped to celebrate the launch of our new digital platform and site whereby we highlight and celebrate women throughout this beautiful city we call home.  Considering the recent turn of events and state of emergency declaration, we thought it in good taste to stagger content over the course of several days instead of the full release we originally had planned.  As the Editor-in-Chief, and a mother, daughter, sister, friend, colleague, and lastly black woman, I have found it difficult to post and talk about things such as beauty regimens, the latest fashions, fitness routines, and tasty recipes, as a greater message is needed.  We've all watched, re-watched, commented and vented our frustrations with the local and national news coverage, and Live videos via social media, but I too must use my platform to cry out in anger, disgust, and even shame for our beloved city.

Charlotte is home for me.  It's the city that I grew up in, the city where I came into my own, the city that I choose to raise my daughter, and the city that I fully intend to grow old in.  For the countless times that we've seen blacks and minorities killed at the hands of police, it's a little different when it hits close to home.  I distinctly remember the community where #KeithLamontScott was shot and killed.  After my divorce many years ago, I remember viewing a condo in that same area, and prior to that, I would travel Old Concord Rd to attend evening classes at UNC Charlotte.  For the last week I've watched local media give their account, inflict their opinions (good and bad), and in doing so, my thought process was always, I wonder what his mother, wife, daughter, sister, friends are thinking and how do they feel?  How do you explain the void of loosing a loved one so sudden and tragic?  And at the hands of those whose mission is to protect and serve.

It is from that perspective that I compose this article.  From a mothers - sisters - daughters - friends point of view.  After all, that's what QCM is all about, all things Charlotte from a woman's perspective.  While I do not have any blood brothers, I do have 3 step brothers, and although we may not be close, these situations make you fear for one's safety.  I also have a father, and nephew, whom I love dearly, and countless male friends.  It's unfortunate that in a world that brags about equality, there are still racial, social, economic, gender, and sexual divides between us.  While many of the shootings and killings of those detained by police have been racially charged, the bigger picture is the great divide between black and blue; people of color and the officers that police them.  Somewhere along the line, communication was halted, stereo types set in which instilled a fear of blacks, and profiling began.  While many would like to say that these things are untrue, unfortunately the numbers lend creditibilty to this ideology.  It is not our intention at QCM to debate or go back and forth on the issue, but to create an awareness and to speak out boldly that #BlackLivesMatter and that blacks are dying at an alarming rate, at the hands of law enforcement.  Do we believe that #AllLivesMatter, of course we do, but within that population, is a group of people who risk a greater chance at dying based upon the color of their skin.

During this weeks protest, we've witnessed an outcry of the people; men, women, boys, girls, and even children.  A call to action is needed.  A healthy dialogue must take place.  Change is never easy, and will always be met with resistance, but it is possible.  We each can play a part in restoring respect, trust, and love, and it can start today.

Last night I witnessed unity....all races marching as one; understanding that this is not exclusively about the killing of our black men and women but about the inequalities blacks and minorities face on a day to day basis. People were Strategic about making sure people were safe, hydrated, and supported to fight this system of racism. - Anonymous

We are officially in the season of fall, and with that comes colder weather, varying temperatures, and a much needed skincare regimen to keep that perfect glow.  For many of us, we've tried the home remedies, followed recommendations of our favorite celebs, which usually turns out to be nothing more than a sponsored post, and still often, less than favorable results.

Compelled to our mission of celebrating and highlighting area locals, we enlisted the help of glam girl and Independent Sales Director for Mary Kay, Kelly Ingland to share some great tips and tricks!  Originally, a means for extra income to help cover her wedding expenses, Kelly has since grown her Mary Kay business into full time entrepreneurship, and credits the brand for skills learned to help make her a better mom, sister, and wife.

Good skincare is key in the changing seasons, and fall is all about exfoliation. Keeping the skin balanced and hydrated with an anti-gaining moisturizer is a must. - Kelly Ingland

To remove layers of dead skin, Kelly recommends the Revealing Facial Peel by Mary Kay, and boasts that the product gives you an immediate brighter skin, improved texture, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.  The product retails for substantially less than comparable products on the market, and is clinically tested to show results in 2 weeks*! (see website for usage)

Another area of skincare, that we often forget, are our lips!  For kissably soft lips, the Satin Lips Set by Mary Kay comes with a mask that exfoliates dead skin and a botanical based balm that soothes and protects.

If you do not have a Mary Kay Consultant, and would like to inquire of the available products and services, visit Kelly's website HERE.

Fall Skincare: Tips + Tricks

On it's last leg of a four city stint, the Ladies That Lead Tour blazed into Charlotte with one theme in mind . . . . BOSS: Bringing Out Successful Sisters!  Founded by educator and entrepreneur Cameka Smith, The BOSS Network, an impactful organization fueling the tour, stands on a mission of promoting and encouraging the small business spirit and career development of women.  On Thursday, BOSS ladies gathered for an evening of empowerment, encouragement, networking, and social gathering.  Equipped with empowering knowledge and fanciful delights, area women shared in success stories, narratives of triumph, overcoming fear, and mastering the complex work-life balance.

Presented by Prudential, attendees enjoyed a chic cocktail hour of hors d'oeuvres and signature cocktails, a skyline view of the city via rooftop atmosphere, and an incredible shopping experience featuring fashions from The Limited.  The Limited also sponsored the Leading Looks Like Award, to honorees Kelli Fisher and Tara Gilmore of The Matchmaking Duo.

Panelists for the evening included Kimberly Watson, Prudential - Cortney Hicks, V101.9FM - Cristy Clavijo-Kish, Hispanicize Media Group - LaToyia Dennis, A Chance to Learn - and featured keynote speaker, singer, actress, and entrepreneur, Michelle Williams.  Williams even broke out into song after hearing the story of an attendee, completely mesmerizing the room, and even drawing tears.  These ladies personified the true meaning of BOSS.
